Program Offerings & Curriculum

Degrees, Outcomes & Curricular Prospectus

Doctor of Medicine

Consistent with the vision and mission of the University and goals of the College of Medicine, the curriculum is competency-based, student-centered, and community-oriented. It is a four-year program and it follows a traditional building block structure, with basic sciences from Second Year to Clinical Clerkship. Although didactic sessions have lectures as the main method to introduce the different topics, small group discussions with the use of problem sets, or trigger cases will be used to emphasize the key points that need to be learned. To provide vertical and horizontal integration, special integration sessions will be incorporated to guide the students in the application of basic principles, and to enhance their skills of analysis, critical-thinking, problem-solving and decision-making. Teaching-learning activities will be conducted in classrooms, laboratories, discussion rooms, skills laboratories, different hospital areas, and in selected communities. The class size has been pegged at 25 per year.

Program Outcomes

The Graduate of the 4-year Doctor of Medicine Program of MMSU must:

  1. Competently manage clinical conditions of all patients in various settings;
  2. Convey information, in written and oral formats, across all types of audiences, venues and media in a manner that can be easily understood;
  3. Initiate planning, organizing, implementation and evaluation of programs and health facilities and provide clear direction, inspiration and motivation to the healthcare team/community;
  4. Utilize current research evidence in decision making as practitioner, educator or researcher. Participate in research activities;
  5. Effectively work in teams in managing patients, institutions, projects and similar situations
  6. Utilize systems-based approach in actual delivery of care and network with relevant partners in solving general health problems;
  7. Update oneself through a variety of avenues for personal and professional growth to ensure quality healthcare and patient safety;
  8. Adhere to national and international codes of conduct and legal standards that govern the profession;
  9. Demonstrate love for one's national heritage, respect for other cultures and commitment to service; and
  10. Adhere to the principles of relevance, equity, quality and cost effectiveness in the delivery of healthcare to patients, families and communities.
